Nike Outdoor Nationals Day 1 Highlights

Eugene, OR- Three NSAF Middle School meet records and one Hayward Field High School record fell on the first day of the Nike Outdoor Nationals at Hayward Field. 3,413 athletes began the four day competition on a sunny day in windy conditions Thursday afternoon. The competition includes athletes from 49 states minus Delaware, four provinces in Canada and eleven athletes from Namibia are entered in the meet.

Here’s a recap of the record setters on Day 1:

  • Boys MS 400m

    Cooper Lutkenhaus(Gene Pike MS, Justin, TX) ran a meet record and MS US #1 time of 48.70 in winning the 400m heat 4 of the on Thursday afternoon. The previous record of 49.37set by Mekhi Gammons of Miami, FL on June 13, 2019. His previous best was 51.17.

    On Wednesday in Renton, WA, Lutkenhaus ran 1:54.90 to win the 800m run in the junior division of the Brooks PR Invitational. That time is better than the 2:00.25 Nike Outdoor Nationals MS record of 2:00.25 run by Marcus Reilly of Northbridge, MA on June 13, 2019. His previous best was 1:56.40. Lutkenhaus will compete in the 800m on Friday at 12:33PM.

    His older brother, Andrew(Northwest, Justin, TX) is entered in the 800m section 5 which will be run on Saturday at 4:03PM. His best of 1:51.00.

    Also, Quatez Williams of Calera MS in Calera AL finished second in 50.41 MS behind Lutkenhaus. That was MS US #6 fastest time this season.

  • Boys MS 100m Dash

    Seventh grader Jasir Fontenot(East Lake MS, San Diego, CA) broke the NSAF meet record in the Boys MS 100m dash Thursday at the Nike Outdoor Nationals with his winning time of 11.14. The previous record, 11.31, was set by Preston Starks(Arlington, TX) on June 13, 2019. Eighth grader Joshua Priest(Country Day, La Jolla, CA) also broke the meet record in finishing second in 11.30.

  • Boys MS Shot Put

    Eighth grader Jordan Pinones(Heritage MS, San Antonio, TX) won the MS Shot Put in a new NSAF record mark of 16.95m(55-07.5). The mark was MS US #2.

    Pinones broke the previous record of 49-04.25 set by Kaleb Moore(Junction City, OR) on June 22, 2022. Jordan is the younger brother of Michael Pinones who is one of the favorites in the Boys Championship Shot Put. which will be contested on Friday at 5:00PM.

  • Boys Champ Discus

    Junior Bryce Ruland(Waterford, MI) threw a new Hayward Field HS facility record in winning the discus with a mark of 213-04. The previous mark, 212-01, was held by Ryan Crouser,(Barlow, Gresham, OR) on June 15, 2011.

Day 2 action begins today at 10:30 AM at Hayward Field Track. Fans are reminded that this evening beginning at 4:00pm, admission will be free to the public for Fan Appreciation night. In addition to top notch high school competition the OTC Distance Carnival will be contested. Also fans are invited to stay until the end of the meet to participate in the Nick Symmonds experience. This will be a musical chair game held on Hayward Field’s track. The winner walks away with $1,000 cash prize.
